17 year-old Miriam Adisa from Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School has been named as the ifs Young Business Writer of the Year 2008.
Financial education charity the ifs School of Finance operates an annual business writing competition open to all UK students aged between 14 and 19 and this year asked students to submit a 1,000 word article with the title, “Saving for the future, one size fits all?”
Entrants wrote about the various savings options available to the British public, considered whether or not these were sufficient, which were preferable and what the role of the state should be in providing for people's retirement.
Every year the competition is judged by a business or finance journalist from a national newspaper. In recent years judges have included Rob Budden from the Financial Times and Robert Cole from The Times. This year the competition was judged by James Daley, Personal Finance Editor for The Independent.
James Daley said,
"Miriam's piece was well written, well researched and well presented. I especially liked the use of charts to illustrate her key points and her use of clear and understandable language - a crucial and all too neglected skill in business journalism. Importantly, the article had a nice rhythm, finishing with some hard hitting and intelligent conclusions about the problems in society which have caused many to stop saving."
Miriam said,
“I am ecstatic at being named ifs Young Business Writer of the Year for 2008. I entered the competition without any great expectation; purely as a challenge to test my writing abilities (a step outside my comfort zone of History and English essays) and also because of a personal interest in the topic - I really didn't expect to win!
I thoroughly enjoyed researching and writing the article and it certainly left me with food for thought about my future saving options.”
