Yash Gupta, a 16-year-old school student from Wakefield, has been named ifs Young Business Writer of the Year.
The free-to-enter business writer competition is organised by financial education charity ifs School of Finance each year as part of their financial capability programme. The nationwide competition is open to all 14-19 year olds and this year attracted a record number of entries.
The question to be answered by all entrants was: "Who is responsible for the Consumer Debt Mountain?"
Yash Gupta composed an interesting and informative article arguing that lenders, individuals and Government must all take some degree of responsibility for the £1.3 trillion debt mountain.
The competition was judged by Robert Cole, Deputy Business Editor at The Times, who hailed the article for its "…soundly reasoned argument and accessible use of language."
In addition to the title "ifs Young Business Writer of the Year 2007," Yash was awarded a cheque for £250 by ifs School of Finance Chief Executive Gavin Shreeve (pictured below). Yash also enjoyed a trip to The Times newspaper where he met Personal Finance Editor Antonia Senior (pictured below) who edited the article for publication.
